Have you noticed last time when you wereΒ packing your bag for a hike, that you are always collecting the same stuff. And this is regardless whether you are packing for a weekend hike or 3 weeks trek.
So this is why I have a list that I always check before I go to the mountains
The list that I last used for my Nepal journey looked like this:
- documents – passport, ID, trekking permits, insurance
- insurance – Yes, I repeat it, but it is very important to make sure that you have a valid insurance for the trip that you are planning. My choice is the membership in the Austrian Alpine Club (OAV), which provides an insurance for various activities up to 6,000m high mountains all over the world.
- backpack– And the size matters π My bag has a capacity for 40 liters and it is the optimalΒ for me. You know that you would start putting some more things if you have place to do so, and this is never a good idea when you need to carry all this.
- rain-cover for the bag
- hiking shoes – waterproof but still lightweight if possible
- sleeping bag – possible light but still warm enough. A combination that is not so easy to find, but I am happy with my choiceΒ (600g. and comfortΒ 5-10Β°C)
- a pair of trekking poles
- jackets (2)
- warm and light – down jacket is always a good choice
- waterproof jacket – GTX or similar
- clothes
- fleece (mid layer)
- trousers (3)
- Β lightweight, quick-drying – convertible is always a good choice
- softshell
- waterproof
- t-shirts (3) – if they are quick-drying synthetic then 3 should be enough – Even if you are not able to wash everyday, than you have at least one clean left.
- thermal underwear top and bottom
- underwear
- socks (3-4 pairs) – same as with the t-shirts, but you would need also one warm pair.
- headlamp (and spare batteries)
- First aid kit
- water bottle or camel bagΒ – I chose LifeStraw bottle as purifying the water in Asia is essential.
- a backpacking towel
- whatever you need to take a shower – but keep it small again
- sunglasses
- gloves
- sun cream
- phone and charger – You might need an adapter if you are traveling abroad. So make sure to check this. Good reference point is the LonelyPlanet Essential Information like this one.
- map, guidebook, GPS – of course you could digitize all these and have the necessary apps on your smart phone, but in this case you are relying on the life of your battery. So why not just copy the pages you need and take them in your bag.
- travel wallet – waterproof and big enough to fit your passport as well
- notebook and a pencil/pen – yes, you would need them π Even I was inspired to do a journal of my trip.
- book or e-reader
- waterproof bags – not only keep your stuff dry, but also help you organize it
- raincoat – you might not need it, if you bring a waterproof jacket and trousers (GTX or other material)
- buff or similar
- flip flops or other lightweight shoes – just something light but very much appreciated after a day spent in your trekking shoes
- camera (and all the gear to it)
- lighter
- earplugs
- a pocket knife
- powerbank or other extra power source
- swimwear
- sleeping bag bedding
- laundry soap
- a second bag (usually light and compact) to use if you are planning short hike, when you can leave your big backpack in the hut
If you are planning to camp, you willΒ also need:
- Tent
- sleeping mat
- Utensils (or just a spork)
- Cane
- Gas cooker, gas and pot
And all should weigh up to 12-13 kg.
If you plan to be in the mountains during the winter months, you need to adjust and extend the list: change the three-season shoes with winter shoes, take a winter hat, warmer gloves and socks, replace the-t-shirt with thermal top underwear and add ghettos. Your route may also require some other gear such as snowshoes, crampons, ice axe or other.
I have compared it with other trekkers’ lists and they all look alike. Here is a good example that I found for the Annapurna trek.
